Strategic Scalp and Hair Support

Individual regenerative therapies each address hair loss through distinct biological mechanisms, and combining them creates a layered approach that simultaneously targets multiple aspects of follicle decline. At the Canadian Hair Transplant Centre, combination protocols are designed around your specific pattern of loss, not assembled from a fixed menu of services.

What Are Regenerative Treatments?

Regenerative treatments are non-surgical therapies that stimulate, support, or enhance the biological environment of existing hair follicles. They’re most effective in areas where follicles remain viable but are producing progressively finer, shorter hair due to miniaturisation. When two or more regenerative therapies are used in a coordinated protocol, their combined effect on follicle activity, scalp circulation, and medication delivery can exceed what either can achieve on its own.

The Canadian Hair Transplant Centre Difference

A combination treatment protocol is only as effective as the clinical judgment used to design it. The wrong combination, the wrong sequence, or the wrong candidacy assessment can result in a significant investment of time and money with limited return. Here, every treatment is developed by our founder, Dr. Anil Sharma, a licensed physician registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) with over 15 years of specialized experience.

The Canadian Hair Transplant Centre is the only practice in Alberta dedicated exclusively to hair restoration, with a fully operational clinic. Our facility is CPSA-approved Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities and adhere to the standards set by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), ensuring that every regenerative treatment is delivered in a properly credentialed clinical environment.

What to Expect From Your Combination Regenerative Treatment Protocol in Edmonton

How We Design Combination Protocols

Before developing your unique treatment regimen, Dr. Sharma will conduct a one-on-one consultation and assess your scalp using TrichoScan imaging, allowing him to identify which zones are experiencing active miniaturisation. This assessment helps determine which therapies are clinically appropriate for your case and in what sequence they should be applied. Your consultation will include the following evaluations:

  • TrichoScan imaging to measure follicular density across donor and recipient zones
  • Hair loss staging using the Norwood-Hamilton or Ludwig classification system
  • Review of any prior treatments and their observed effectiveness
  • Assessment of scalp health, including the presence of any inflammatory conditions that may affect treatment response

Microneedling as a Delivery Enhancer

Microneedling serves a unique role in combination protocols because it does not operate solely as a standalone treatment. The microchannels created during a microneedling session significantly increase the absorption of topical medications applied immediately afterward, thereby amplifying the effectiveness of other elements in the protocol. When sequenced correctly in a combination plan, microneedling may be used to enhance the delivery of the following:

  • Topical finasteride
  • PRP or exosome preparations
  • Topical minoxidil
  • Other physician-prescribed topical compounds

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Exosome Combination

One of the most commonly used combination approaches at our clinic pairs PRP therapy with exosome treatment in a single session. PRP contributes a patient-derived growth factor stimulus drawn from concentrated platelets, while exosome preparations deliver a broader payload of cell-signalling molecules that support intercellular communication within the follicular environment. Applied together, this combination targets follicle support through two complementary biological pathways, making it ideal for patients with moderate diffuse thinning who want a substantive non-surgical intervention.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) as Ongoing Maintenance

Low-level laser therapy is typically incorporated into combination regimens as a between-session maintenance tool to support scalp circulation and follicle activity. Because LLLT sessions require no recovery time and can be scheduled freely around injection-based treatments, they fill a practical role in keeping the follicular environment active between PRP or exosome appointments. Dr. Sharma will determine the appropriate frequency and sequencing of LLLT in your combination plan at our clinic, based on your overall protocol and treatment goals.

Recovery Tailored to Your Needs

Recovery from your combination regenerative protocol will depend on which therapies are included in your session. Injection-based components such as PRP or exosome therapy may cause mild redness or tenderness at the treatment sites for 24-48 hours. Microneedling may add a brief period of scalp sensitivity of similar duration, and LLLT involves no recovery at all.

When multiple therapies are delivered in a single session, side effects do not compound significantly, and most patients resume normal activities the same day or the following morning. We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise, direct scalp sun exposure, and additional topical products on treatment day to allow injected materials and enhanced topicals to settle undisturbed.

Your Post-Treatment Process

After each combination session, our team will share specific aftercare guidance tailored to the therapies delivered that day. Your recovery plan may include the following:

  • Avoiding hair washing for a specified period following treatment
  • Sun protection and scalp exposure guidelines
  • Restrictions on exercise and physical activity for the treatment day
  • Guidance on alcohol consumption in the 24 hours following treatment
  • Instructions for continuing any complementary topical treatments at home
  • Side effects to monitor and when to contact the clinic

We’ll review your scalp health at follow-up appointments at our offices using TrichoScan imaging and clinical photography, and adjust your protocol based on your scalp’s response.

Gradual, Powerful Results

The results of your combination regenerative protocol will build gradually over the course of your treatment series. Most patients begin to notice a reduction in daily shedding within the first two to three months, with measurable improvements in follicular density and hair shaft diameter becoming apparent between months four and six. Ongoing maintenance sessions are necessary to sustain results, as the therapies support follicle health over time rather than producing a single, permanent change.

Combination Regenerative Treatment Protocols Frequently Asked Questions

How is a combination protocol different from booking individual treatments separately?

A combination protocol is a coordinated clinical plan in which each therapy is selected and sequenced to complement the others. Booking therapies independently, without a clinical assessment of how they interact, may result in redundancy, poor sequencing, or missing a more effective approach for your specific hair loss pattern.

Can a combination protocol be used alongside hair transplant surgery?

Yes. Regenerative combination protocols are frequently used before surgery to optimise scalp health and after surgery to support healing and protect non-transplanted hair from continued thinning. Dr. Sharma will advise on appropriate timing and which therapies are suitable at each phase of your surgical journey.

How long does a combination session take?

Session length depends on which therapies are included. A PRP and exosome session with microneedling typically takes approximately 60-90 minutes. Sessions that also include LLLT may be slightly longer. During your consultation, Dr. Sharma will provide you with an accurate time estimate once your protocol is confirmed.

Will I need to commit to a long-term schedule for combination protocols to be effective?

Yes. Regenerative therapies require consistent, ongoing treatment to maintain their effects on follicle health. Most combination protocols involve an initial active series of sessions over several months, followed by a reduced maintenance schedule. Dr. Sharma will outline a realistic long-term commitment at your initial consultation so you can plan accordingly.

Schedule Your Surgical Consultation

Hair transplant surgery requires careful evaluation and planning. Schedule a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for FUE or FUT procedures. The assessment includes donor evaluation, recipient area analysis, and discussion of realistic outcomes based on your individual characteristics. For medical therapy options, consult with your primary physician or dermatologist.
