Both techniques relocate DHT-resistant follicles to areas of thinning or baldness, but they differ in how donor hair is harvested, how much graft volume can be achieved in a single session, and how each approach affects the donor area afterward. What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a technique in which individual follicular units are removed one at a time from the donor area using a small 0.6-0.7 mm circular punch. Because the procedure does not include tissue removal, FUE produces small, dispersed healing sites rather than a continuous incision, resulting in nearly undetectable scarring in the treatment area. It’s best suited to patients who prefer shorter hairstyles after recovery or are concerned about scarring.

What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) involves removing a narrow linear strip of scalp from the donor zone, where follicles are genetically resistant to DHT and loss. The strip is then dissected under stereomicroscopic magnification to isolate individual follicular units for implantation, which Dr. Sharma carefully places in the scalp. FUT allows for a higher graft yield in a single session than FUE, making it the ideal option for patients with moderate to advanced hair loss who require significant coverage in a single procedure.

Determining Which Approach Is Right for You

Advanced, Precise Extraction

The primary difference between FUT and FUE hair transplants lies in how donor follicles are harvested. In FUE, Dr. Sharma uses a 0.6 to 0.7 mm manual punch to extract follicular units individually under magnification. In FUT, he excises a narrow donor strip and closes the wound using a layered suturing technique designed to minimise scar width.

Graft Dissection, Inspection, and Storage

Regardless of which technique is used, all harvested grafts will undergo stereomicroscopic inspection before implantation. Dr. Sharma applies the following protocols to both FUE and FUT cases:

Each graft will be assessed for intact root and bulge structure, which houses the regenerative stem cells necessary for growth
Damaged or incomplete grafts will be excluded from implantation
Approved grafts are stored in HypoThermosol and ATP solution at 2-4℃ to preserve graft integrity
A first-out, first-in system minimises the time each follicle spends outside the body to improve survival rates

Hairline Design and Graft Allocation

Before any grafts are placed, Dr. Sharma will design the recipient area using fixed anatomical landmarks, accounting for your facial proportions and the long-term trajectory of your hair loss. Dr. Sharma will apply the following distribution logic across both FUE and FUT cases:

Single-hair grafts will be directed to the hairline to create a natural leading edge
Double and multi-hair grafts will be placed in the mid-scalp and crown to build density
TrichoScan imaging will determine how many grafts can be safely allocated to each zone
Crown planning will account for the potential progression of future loss to protect the donor supply

Your Hair Restoration Scar

FUE produces small, circular healing sites distributed across the donor area, which typically resolve as faint dot scars that are difficult to detect at most hair lengths. FUT produces a single linear scar at the back of the scalp, positioned so that it sits beneath the surrounding hair at normal length. Dr. Sharma uses layered suturing and trichophytic closures to minimise scar width in FUT cases. Both methods involve some permanent scarring, and the extent depends on hair length preference, individual healing, and surgical technique.

Patient-Centred Recovery

Recovery after FUE and FUT hair transplants in Edmonton follows a similar timeline in the recipient area, with minor scabbing, swelling, and tenderness that typically resolve within two weeks. The two methods differ in the donor area: FUE heals with small, dispersed sites that cause minimal tightness, while FUT may produce some tightness and temporary loss of sensation at the back of the scalp in the first one to two weeks. We'll provide you with a hydration spray to support early healing. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days, though those in physically demanding roles should allow at least one week before returning to work. Both FUE and FUT follow the same growth timeline. Your transplanted hairs will shed in the first two to three weeks as a normal part of the growth cycle, and early regrowth will begin within three months, though initial growth may be patchy.

Approximately half of your final result will be visible by month six, and full density and hair texture will reach maturity between 12 and 18 months post-procedure.

Does graft count alone determine how full the result will look?

No. Visual density depends on several variables beyond graft count, including hair calibre, curl, colour contrast with the scalp, and the precision of placement angulation. Two patients with identical graft counts may experience noticeably different outcomes due to individual characteristics.
