Precision From the First Punch to the Last Placement

Here, our hair restoration is defined by accuracy from start to finish, with a manual approach that prevents overharvesting and unnecessary scalp trauma. The critical steps of every procedure are performed by Dr. Sharma, including recipient site creation, angle determination and aesthetic design. Implantation is performed by our specialist team.

Male receiving FUE hair transplant procedure

What Is an FUE Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a surgical technique in which individual follicular units are removed from the donor area using small circular 0.6-0.7 mm punches and relocated to areas of thinning or baldness. The extracted follicles are DHT-resistant and retain that stability after transplantation, producing permanent results. While FUE procedures are often thought of as scarless or non-invasive, each extraction does create a small wound. Each wound heals with dot-like scarring that’s hard to detect in the scalp, preserving a natural-looking appearance.

Our FUE hair transplants take the following steps:

  • All extractions are performed manually by Dr. Sharma under high magnification
  • Grafts are stored in chilled HypoThermosol + ATP to preserve cell viability
  • Trichoscopy and TRANSPLANNER® are used to map donor density and angulation
  • Each graft is examined under a microscope to confirm root and bulge integrity
  • A “first out, first in” system minimises the time grafts spend outside the body

Our approach is simple: every punch, every incision, and every placement decision is made by Dr. Sharma, not by a technician. Here, we believe that physician-led care is the gold standard for hair restoration, and Dr. Sharma develops individualised treatment plans for every patient. All of our hair restoration procedures align with the safety and quality standards of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), and our facility is approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA ). Your care will be personally performed by Dr. Sharma, who is licensed by the CPSA and has trained in France, Italy, and the UK, bringing the best of each country’s method to Alberta.

Doctor background

What to Expect From Your FUE Hair Transplant in Edmonton

Surgical Planning and Anaesthesia

Before any extraction begins, Dr. Sharma will map your hairline using fixed anatomical landmarks and assess your donor area with advanced TrichoScan imaging. Local anaesthesia will be administered using nerve blocks targeting the supraorbital, supratrochlear, and temporal zones, with a combination of lidocaine for fast onset and marcaine for prolonged comfort. No general sedation is used, so you’ll be awake for the entire procedure and can let our team know when you need a break.

Graft Extraction

During your treatment, Dr. Sharma will extract hair follicles using 0.6 to 0.7 mm manual punches under surgical magnification. No motorised or robotic devices are used at any stage. Each punch is oriented to match the natural exit angle of the follicle, reducing transection risk and preserving graft integrity, and extracted grafts are transferred immediately to a chilled HypoThermosol and ATP preservation solution.

Graft Inspection and Storage

After extraction, each harvested graft is examined under a stereomicroscope before being cleared for implantation. Dr. Sharma and his technicians perform a close graft Inspection to confirm the following:

  • Intact root and bulge structure, which contains the regenerative stem cells necessary for
  • growth
  • Adequate follicular unit composition (single, double, or multi-hair grafts)
  • Absence of transection or mechanical damage
  • Hydration status and overall viability

Approved grafts are stored in a backup-regulated cold chain system that’s 2-4℃ to preserve graft integrity. We use a first-out, first-in system to minimise the time each graft spends outside the body, reducing ischaemic stress on the follicle.

Recipient Site Creation and Placement

Before beginning implantation, Dr. Sharma makes test incisions to confirm the correct blade size and depth for your scalp.

All incisions follow the natural angle, direction, and curvature of the surrounding hair for a more organic look, and we use epinephrine to firm the tissue and reduce bleeding, improving placement accuracy.

Where density goals require it, the lateral slit technique is applied and each graft is hand-placed under magnification with hair direction and curl matched to native growth patterns.

Patient-First Recovery

Recovery after FUE hair transplants in Edmonton typically involves swelling, bruising, and tenderness along the scalp that resolve within one week. You’ll notice dot-like scabs and crusting along the extraction sites, which should fall off over the following 10 days. We recommend keeping your head elevated and using the provided hydration spray to support early healing. Most patients return to work, social gatherings, and light activity within three to five days, but those with more physically demanding careers should wait at least a week before resuming work. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity and direct sun exposure for approximately 7-10 days to prevent scalp irritation.

Your Post-Op Process

After your procedure, Dr. Sharma will provide you with a customised recovery plan that’s tailored to your scalp and hair health. This plan may include the following:

  • Incision site care and cleaning protocols
  • Hair and scalp care recommendations
  • Hygiene and hair styling guidelines
  • Activity limitations
  • Side effects to monitor
  • Sun protection and exposure requirements
  • Swelling management strategies

Over the coming months, you’ll return to our offices for short follow-up appointments with Dr. Sharma. There, he’ll assess your graft health, check the growth of your transplanted hair, and review your non-treated areas for signs of loss or thinning. Depending on your needs, he may develop a long-term hair maintenance plan using regenerative therapies or medical hair loss treatments.

Transformative Results

New hair growth from FUE procedures is gradual, with most patients noticing early regrowth around the three-month mark and approximately half of the final result coming in by month six. Early shedding is normal within the first month, and initial growth may be patchy or uneven.

Your hair will typically reach its full density and texture between 12 and 18 months after the procedure, depending on your individual biology, hair characteristics, and aftercare compliance.

FUE Hair Transplant Frequently Asked Questions

How much do hair transplants cost at Canadian Hair Transplant Centre?

FUE and FUT are priced the same and quoted case by case. Graft pricing starts at $5 per graft. Hair transplant procedures start at $8,000. The consultation quote is fixed, with no surprises.

Do you offer financing?

We offer transparent financing options to make our hair restoration services more accessible to Canadians and visitors alike.

Is FUE suitable for women as well as men?

Yes. FUE is performed on both male and female patients at our clinic. Female hair loss has distinct clinical characteristics, and candidacy is assessed individually using TrichoScan imaging and a full scalp evaluation.

How many grafts will I need for my FUE procedure?

Graft numbers are determined by TrichoScan imaging rather than visual estimation. We use proven technology to precisely map the area to be covered, and the recommended count reflects your anatomy and donor supply. Graft count alone does not determine the visual result; hair calibre, curl, and colour contrast also affect perceived density.

Can FUE be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Regenerative therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosome treatment are often used alongside FUE to support scalp health and optimise healing conditions. Dr. Sharma will discuss whether a combination approach is appropriate during your consultation.

What is the no-shave FUE option?

No-shave FUE allows patients to keep surrounding hair at its current length, concealing the donor area during recovery. This approach takes additional procedure time and is typically split across two sessions. Not every patient is a clinical candidate for this option, and suitability is confirmed at consultation.

Will I need more than one FUE session?

Some patients achieve their goals in a single session. Others with more advanced hair loss or higher-density targets may benefit from a second procedure once the initial results have fully matured. Dr. Sharma plans every case with the donor supply's long-term capacity in mind to preserve the option for future sessions.

Schedule Your Surgical Consultation

Hair transplant surgery requires careful evaluation and planning. Schedule a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for FUE or FUT procedures. The assessment includes donor evaluation, recipient area analysis, and discussion of realistic outcomes based on your individual characteristics. For medical therapy options, consult with your primary physician or dermatologist.
